Why I’m standing for Labour’s Conference Arrangements Committee

By Jean Crocker

I want to do everything I can to have a Labour Conference which is democratic at every stage, and in all its processes.

The views of members must be clearly heard both in motions and in debate. Policy passed at Conference should be Labour Party policy. When delegates meet to combine a set of motions into a larger composite motion, and there are people of status there to advise them, it must always be made clear that the final wording is up to the elected delegates themselves.

The CAC must be impartial and its decisions transparent, fair and accountable.  There is no democracy unless all have access, and advice from disabled members must be sought and acted on.

I’ve been on the Women’s Conference CAC since 2017, where I’ve always worked for a Conference as much as possible in the hands of grassroots members. I’ve seen what works and where there are pitfalls. I feel ready to take that experience forward to Labour Conference. If elected I’ll be available to listen to members and answer queries

In Gateshead, I’m Vice-Chair of my branch, Secretary of the Women’s Branch and on the CLP Executive. In the University and College Union, I campaigned for many years on behalf of the precariously employed. I was on the Disabled Members’ Committee and on the union’s NEC for three years.

I am very happy to be supported by the Centre Left Grassroots Alliance. Please also nominate and vote for Chris Saltmarsh.
