Jeremy Corbyn will be a key speaker at a Unions for a Just Transition meeting in Islington on 8th February, organised by Islington Labour Environmental Forum.
Speaking ahead of the event, Jeremy Corbyn said: “This is a climate emergency – and we need systemic change, now. There is no climate justice without social justice, and we will not save the planet unless we build an economy that serves human needs, not corporate greed. As the MP for Islington North, I will continue to campaign for a Green Industrial Revolution – one that creates millions of green, unionised jobs, as part of a just transition to a more sustainable and equal future.
The meeting takes place against a backdrop of Tata Steel’s plans to close blast furnaces at the UK’s biggest steelworks at Port Talbot as part of a transition to greener steelmaking. It will result in up to 2,800 redundancies with devastating consequences for the area. This is a warning: trade unionists and environmentalists must fight together for a just transition.
A transition to a sustainable economy must not result in unemployment and the immiseration of communities. The environmental challenges we face are an opportunity to create a sustainable and fairer society that enhances the quality of peoples’ lives.
The union movement has always led fights for social justice and human rights – now trade unions must lead in the struggle for climate justice.
The meeting will bring together trade unionists and environmentalists from across North London to explore how to achieve a just transition to create well paid, environmentally sustainable jobs. It is hoped this will further the development of a trade union environmental network to promote the positive changes we need for a sustainable and fairer society.
