Another Ukraine is possible

By the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign

As Donald Trump arrives in the UK, a coalition of Labour MPs, trade union leaders, human rights campaigners and civil society figures is calling for a reset of solidarity with Ukraine.

Joining former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell MP (Hayes & Harlington) in demanding this reset are:

  • Nadia Whittome MP (Nottingham East)
  • Clive Lewis MP (Norwich South)
  • Rachael Maskell MP (York Central)
  • Margaret Mullane MP (Dagenham and Rainham)
  • Ian Lavery MP (Blyth and Ashington)
  • Mick Antoniw MS (Pontypridd)
  • Baroness Christine Blower
  • Julie Ward, former MEP for North West England

An Alternative Plan for Ukraine

The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign will launch a bold seven-point plan—endorsed by union leaders, academics and human rights advocates—to rally Europe in independent action supporting Ukrainian sovereignty and resisting any Trump-Putin rapprochement.

It has seven clear demands:

  1. Increased humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine, including delivery of critical defensive weapons
  2. Transfer of frozen Russian state assets to Ukraine and cancellation of Ukraine’s debt
  3. A “Save Ukraine” summit of European and allied leaders committing to sustained military and financial support
  4. Full justice for war crimes, including the abduction of Ukrainian children
  5. A fair and progressive reconstruction programme upholding workers’ rights
  6. Recognition that Trump’s alignment with Putin threatens global stability
  7. Reversal of foreign aid cuts across European partners

Broad Coalition of Signatories

Among the first to sign are:

  • Trade union leader from ASLEF, NUM, PCS, including Mick Whelan, General Secretary, ASLEF train drivers union, Chris Kitchen, General Secretary, National Union of Mineworkers, Oksana Holota, Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine, John Moloney, Assistant General Secretary, Public and Commercial Service Union (pc)
  • Journalists George Monbiot and Andrew Fisher
  • Human rights activist Peter Tatchell
  • US Senator Tanya Vyhovsky
  • Ukrainian community groups in the UK
  • Ukrainian social democrats and democratic socialists

With the Ukrainian government under pressure from within—facing mass protests over threatened anti-corruption reforms—and Russia intensifying deadly drone attacks on Kyiv, this is a pivotal moment. This campaign  warns that any deal between Trump and Putin would cement Ukraine’s partition and serve narrow corporate and oligarchic interests.

John McDonnell MP said:“This is a critical time in the future of Ukraine. There can be no sell-out of the Ukrainian people after all they have sacrificed for their freedom. It’s time to provide maximum solidarity.”

Christopher Ford, Secretary of the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign, said: “European social democrats have warned of the return of authoritarianism, embodied by the US President Trump. The labour movement must oppose the strategy of currying favour with Trump, who has undermined Ukraine and emboldened Putin’s bombing campaign.  Labour should help forge a European alliance independent of Trump – that helps Ukraine win.”
