Preparations for Labour Party Conference

Contemporary motions

Momentum are supporting a number of contemporary motions for Labour Conference this year. Some motions are also supported by other campaign groups, as detailed under each one.

  1. Tackling child poverty – also supported by Compass and Open Labour
  2. Restoring trust in the Equality and Human Rights Commission –  also supported by Labour for Trans Rights and Open Labour
  3. Support refugees and oppose racism
  4. Meaningful action to Israel’s atrocities in Gaza -also supported by Palestine Solidarity Campaign
  5. Bring water permanently into public ownership – also supported by Compass
  6. Solve the housing crisis – drafted by Labour Campaign for Council Housing.

CLPs have until 5pm on Thursday 11th September to submit motions. Many CLPs require one week’s notice to submit motions before meeting, so find out when your CLP is meeting and discuss with other party members what motion to submit as soon as possible.

Rule changes

CLPs can submit either one contemporary motion or onerule change by Thursday 11th September. Six motions from the CLP section can be debated at Conference, as well as six motions supported by affiliates. CLPs that decide to submit a contemporary motion must wait until the publication of that report before submitting.

For guidance and suggestions on rule changes, see here.

Conference still matters

Last year Conference voted to repeal cuts to Winter Fuel Payments and the leadership was forced to withdraw an anti-migrant motion due to opposition from trade union and CLP delegates. It showed how important it is for socialists and progressive to represent their CLPs.

This year’s Conference is scheduled to take place in Liverpool from Sunday 28th September to Wednesday 1st October.

Momentum will also be hosting a joint fringe event in collaboration with the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy. Find out more details here.

A slate of socialist candidates are running for key positions this year – see here. All these positions will be elected by delegates at Labour Conference.
