The Care Manifesto: The Politics of Interdependence, by The Care Collective, published by Verso.
The contradictions between the free market economy and how successfully overcoming the coronavirus are increasingly glaring. But they are just a more acute expression of the failings of neoliberalism in relation to care more generally.
Neoliberalism has pushed aside ideas of social and community welfare in favour of “individualised notions of resilience, wellness and self-improvement”. The impact of these beliefs is reflected in public attitudes to climate crisis, immigration, the elderly and much more.
Despite our manifest interdependency with other people in communities, to depend on care has been pathologised as a weakness, rather than being seen as part of the human condition.
How do we overcome this? How do we create caring communities? These are the questions The Care Manifesto seeks to address.
