Disabled People Go to Westminster to Tell Their MPs: Bin the Bill!

On Wednesday 9th July, disabled people will be going to Westminster to tell their MPs to vote Against the Universal Credit Bill. One group of disabled people will green-card their MPs in the morning from 11:30am to tell their MPs that they need to bin the bill. At 4pm, disabled people will gather outside Old Palace Yard to tell their MPs to protect future claimants and reject the bill.

The first event will see disabled people requesting to meet with their MPs to tell them why disabled people’s organisations are asking them to vote against the Universal Credit Bill. Disabled people from across the UK will travel to Parliament to request a ten-minute meeting with their representatives.

The second event will be an ‘open mic’, where disabled campaigners will call for MPs to vote against the Universal Credit Bill. They will have speakers from across the disabled people’s movement to share our solidarity and support during a difficult time to be disabled in the UK. They will be joined by representatives from Unite the Union and the National Education Union.

Disabled people and their organisations have been campaigning against the cruel benefit cuts since they were announced in March. Last month, 120 disabled people attended a Mass Lobby against the cuts. Last week, they sat outside for hours during a heatwave to show MPs that they completely reject these cuts. This week they are back to say: the concessions are not enough. They will stand with future claimants and ask MPs to vote against.
