The Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs is today launching a new pamphlet at Labour Party Conference setting out the policies it believes Andy Burnham should adopt to rebuild Labour’s support after the failures of the Starmer leadership and to deliver on his pledge to reverse 40 years of neoliberalism.
The pamphlet, The Socialist Policies We Need, includes proposals for a new economic settlement; bringing public services back into public hands; tax reforms to raise billions for social and economic investment; strengthening workers’ rights; fixing Britain’s housing and social security systems; strengthening the NHS; and transforming social care.
It also sets out the approach the Government should take to artificial intelligence, climate change, foreign policy, civil liberties, immigration and asylum, Labour Party democracy and rebuilding Labour in Scotland.
Richard Burgon MP, Secretary of the Socialist Campaign Group, said: “Andy Burnham has rightly identified 40 years of neoliberalism as the cause of so many of the problems facing our communities.
“But reversing that will require fundamental changes in who owns wealth, who holds power and whose interests shape the decisions of government.
“This pamphlet is our contribution to the debate we need across the Labour Party about how we rebuild after the failings of the Starmer era with a policy agenda that delivers the change people voted for, builds a better future for our communities and prevents a Nigel Farage government coming to power.”
The pamphlet’s foreword also highlights how it was members of the Socialist Campaign Group who repeatedly led the opposition to the failed policies of the Starmer government – from cuts to winter fuel support and attacks on disability benefits to the failure to take action against Israel over its war crimes in Gaza – including through debates and campaigns in Parliament that forced important concessions from the Government.
